One of the more persistent questions around the Chicago Bears this offseason centers on Ryan Pace. Is he on the hot seat? A lot of fans think he should be. After finishing 8-8 last season and watching his prized quarterback Mitch Trubisky regress, it feels like 2020 is his last stand. If he doesn't deliver a playoff run, he should be gone. Some in the media believe there is such a possibility.
However, it may not be that cut and dry. Adam Jahns of The Athletic, one of the most plugged-in Bears beat writers hinted strongly that Pace is much more secure than people think. Only a disastrous losing season is likely to get him kicked out of the front office. Ownership seems to trust his vision for the team, both for 2020 and in the long-term.
"Pace is under pressure to orchestrate a turnaround after the Bears went from 12-4 in 2018 to 8-8 last season, with Trubisky — his handpicked quarterback — regressing.
But Pace’s seat isn’t as hot as some make it out to be or some frustrated fans want it to be.
With ownership’s backing, Pace is still free to operate with a long-term vision even though his spending in free agency indicated he’s functioning with a win-now attitude."
Ryan Pace has set the Bears up for success this season
Plenty of experts aren't buying the Bears' offseason to this point. In reality, Pace has done everything in his power to set them up for a playoff run. He improved two vital areas of the roster. Nick Foles brings championship credibility to the quarterback position despite not always being the most consistent performer. Robert Quinn vastly upgrades the defensive edge rush by replacing Leonard Floyd at outside linebacker.
Even the arrival of Jimmy Graham, expensive and older as he is, gives them some help at tight end. If he can deliver an adequate draft that finds one or two contributors? The Bears are good enough to compete this year. There is no denying the man has made his share of big mistakes. However, he also rebuilt the team from a dumpster fire back in 2015. It seems like ownership is willing to give him a little more time to find the right formula.
