For months Chicago Bears fans have tried to find a quality Mitch Trubisky nickname. Thus far there have been some decent ones. "Mr. Biscuit" is the one he inherited from college. "Truthbisky" is another that came from analysts at NFL Network. Other have settled for the far simpler "Tru." Still none of them have quite had the true zing required of a quarterback.
Well that search has come to an end. Trubisky is now the starter for the Bears and it seems teammates now feel free to discuss what he's been like behind the scenes. Particularly on the practice field. Turns out according to John Mullin of CSN Chicago who got the quote that should set the nickname in stone. Who was the man to deliver it? None other than Leonard Floyd, the Bears' first round pick of last year.
“You can call him ‘The Pretty Boy Assassin.’”Oh wow. That's just.......that's magnificent. It sounds like Floyd is trying to maintain his dignity as a defensive player while showing admiration for his teammate at the same time. Yet the best was still to come when he elaborated on what he meant.
Mitch Trubisky nickname came from his delight in torturing defense
There had been rumors circulating out of practices that Trubisky was not taking his role as backup quarterback lightly. With it came the job of running the scout team. He was tasked with giving the defense looks for the upcoming opponent. Most of the time the expectation is for the scout team to not try to show up the starters. It seems the young quarterback wasn't having any of that. He took the liberty of nipping at the defense with big plays at every opportunity, and delighting in every second of it.“He’s competitive, really competitive, but with a smile on his face.,” said Floyd, shaking his head. “He’ll beat you, then be walking back to the huddle, look over and just smile at you. He’ll beat you with a smile on his face. He’s got a lotta [swagger]. I like his swag’, his demeanor,” Floyd said. “He’ll rip you but he’s got control of the offense. He’ll switch cadences, do stuff you’re not expecting, make plays.”That's downright savage behavior for a rookie. The fact it's coming from the Bears new starting quarterback? It is a level of competitiveness from that position fans of this team haven't seen in years. If he's already this confident and in command of the offense, how much better can he get with more experience?
