Like It or Not, Mitch Trubisky Delivered Again When Needed

It's okay to be frustrated over Mitch Trubisky. The young Chicago Bears quarterback hasn't been good so far this year. He's struggled through three games and hasn't found a comfort zone. His footwork is still erratic and he can't find a way to settle down in the pocket, which has led to a lot of misplaced throws. It's tough to watch. At the same time, the Bears are 2-1. They lead the NFC North. So in spite of all the frustration, this team is getting the job done. Granted, most of that is thanks to a spectacular defense led by Khalil Mack, Akiem Hicks, and others. However, that's not being entirely fair. There have been a few times the past couple weeks that Trubisky was needed to deliver a drive to get points. Each time he delivered. It happened again in Arizona. Let's set the scene.

The Bears were floundering early in the 3rd quarter. They were behind 14-3 and knew they needed points to ease pressure on the defense. Another 3-and-out could prove a killer. After a no gain by Jordan Howard on first down to open the drive, Trubisky showed some of his progress as a pro passer with a beautiful deep strike to Allen Robinson for 39 yards. Trubisky set his feet well, stood tall in the pocket and delivered on time and on target. His long bad pass of the drive came from the Cardinals 18-yard line when he tried to force it in to Robinson and it was almost picked. After that, the Bears ran twice with Tarik Cohen and Jordan Howard to punch it in for a crucial touchdown to make it 14-10. That lone bad pass overshadowed what was the best drive of the day for Trubisky. The touchdown seemed to settle the Bears defense and they continued to tee off on the Cardinals, giving the offense enough extra possessions to get two more field goals to put the team on top for good 16-14. Like it or not, all 16 points were scored by the offense.

Does he need to get better?

Of course. Matt Nagy said as much after the game.

“It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to realize we’re winning games because of our defense. But that doesn’t mean the offense isn’t a huge part of this.... ...I KNOW PEOPLE DON’T UNDERSTAND THIS: IT TAKES TIME. WE *WILL* GET THIS."

It's true. The Bears defense was ready to be who they are. This is their fourth season in the same scheme and the players are familiar with each other. This was the third game of this new offense for Trubisky. One that is known for its complexity. Learning to play it with precision is hard. It takes time and hard-won experience. Bears fans, like or not, must let this play out.
