Matt Eberflus Is Indeed Planning Staff Shakeup If He Survives

It isn't a secret the Chicago Bears are contemplating what to do with Matt Eberflus once the season is over. It's only his second year on the job. Most head coaches get three before making a decision on whether to keep them any further. However, he is in special circumstances. For one, new team president Kevin Warren had no say in his hiring and may wish to bring in somebody he's more familiar with. He also had the longest losing streak in franchise history and has overseen three double-digit 4th quarter collapses since the end of September.

Still, the team has won three of their last five, with both losses being two of those painful collapses. The defense is playing much better since Eberflus took over play calling duties. One can make a case the team is trending in the right direction. If he can get one or two more wins in the final three weeks, that might be enough to justify a return. For his part, Eberflus is uncertain of his future. Warren and GM Ryan Poles haven't made any decisions and don't plan to until the season is over.

One thing is clear, though. According to a source, Eberflus is planning a shakeup of his coaching staff if he survives.

The source indicated that a large swath of the offensive staff will be gone, headlined by offensive coordinator Luke Getsy and quarterbacks coach Andrew Janocko. The only name mentioned who is unlikely to go anywhere is offensive line coach Chris Morgan. This isn't a surprise, given how well young guys like Braxton Jones and Darnell Wright have played. Special teams coordinator Richard Hightower would also be retained. This is a clear signal that Eberflus aims to upgrade the offensive staff to further elevate Justin Fields or, more likely, prepare to develop a young high draft pick.

Matt Eberflus has danced around the Getsy topic for the past week, insisting he remains firmly behind the offensive coordinator. However, whenever pressed on his plans for next season, the head coach sidesteps any definitive answers. To anybody with common sense, this is a glaring red flag. If Eberflus were indeed firmly behind Getsy, he would have no issue declaring there would be no changes. None of this may matter if he gets fired, but expect staff changes if the Bears choose to stay the course.
