Offensive coordinator remains the focus for the Chicago Bears. However, those aren't the only spots on the coaching staff that head coach Matt Eberflus needs to fill. The quarterbacks, wide receivers, and running backs also need new position coaches. While they might not be the bigger priority at the moment, that doesn't mean Eberflus and GM Ryan Poles aren't monitoring possibilities on the market. In fact, there is one name the head coach is keeping an ear out for in case he becomes available. That is Kevin Patullo.
A source informed SM that the Bears are monitoring the situation in Philadelphia closely. Patullo is their current passing game coordinator. There are rumblings that head coach Nick Sirianni could get fired after the disastrous loss to Tampa Bay in the playoffs. If that happens, his staff would be fair game to poach. Patullo worked as the Indianapolis Colts' wide receivers coach in 2018 and 2019. Eberflus was there at the same time as the defensive coordinator. The two have a relationship.
Patullo has a growing reputation for coaching up quarterbacks. As quarterbacks coach for the Jets in 2015, he helped Ryan Fitzpatrick set career highs in yards (3,905) and touchdowns (31). He helped 39-year-old Philip Rivers have one last solid season in 2020 after an ugly exit in L.A. Yet his best work has been aiding in the development of Jalen Hurts with the Eagles, who was an MVP hopeful last season and came minutes away from winning the Super Bowl.
Matt Eberflus tried the wide net approach.
He brought in young assistants from across the NFL, most of them having some form of experience working in a wide-zone offense. Unfortunately, it didn't work out as he hoped. Unsurprisingly, he might be considering the idea of bringing in people he's more familiar with. Patullo has credible experience with three different organizations and has worked with both veteran and young quarterbacks. He would be an immediate asset to either Justin Fields or whoever the Bears end up taking 1st overall.
Sirianni's fate remains undetermined. It is exceedingly rare for an organization to fire its head coach after three playoff runs and a Super Bowl appearance. Then again, this is the same organization that fired Andy Reid and Doug Pederson. If Sirianni is out, don't be shocked if Patullo becomes an immediate target for Matt Eberflus. This would presume whichever offensive coordinator they hire is okay with it.
