The Chicago Bears will spend in free agency, but it's looking like they won't go crazy. They plan to find key pieces to fix certain holes in the roster. Then they'll go hunting for their big fish in the draft. GM Ryan Poles and head coach Matt Eberflus may do this by seeking out potential bargains. That includes cap casualties and players that may get cut by their current teams due to scheme issues or coaching changes. Free agency is just over two weeks away. Moves are coming.
Specific names are already gaining steam as being cut or traded soon. Brandin Cooks, Shaquill Griffin, and Michael Thomas are among the most popular. However, there is one that should have the Bears' full attention, especially Eberflus'. According to Indianapolis Colts beat writer Stephen Holder of ESPN, there is a strong possibility the team could move on from former Pro Bowl cornerback Kenny Moore. His standing has taken a dip after last season, where he missed five games and failed to secure an interception.
"Kenny Moore II, CB
Moore was a centerpiece of the Colts defense in former coordinator Matt Eberflus' scheme. But since Eberflus' departure, Moore has been through a contract dispute and has had difficulty adapting to Gus Bradley's system. Moore's slot corner role is deemphasized in the current scheme, reducing his once-significant impact and making him less valuable to the Colts."
Matt Eberflus has every reason to lure Moore to Chicago.
During his last two years under the coach in Indianapolis, he had eight interceptions and made the Pro Bowl as the team's nickel cornerback. That earned him a place on the annual top 100 NFL player rankings. It's clear the scheme change under Bradley hurt. With over $8 million owed to him this season, the Colts might be better off moving on and finding players who better fit the new system. Moore makes tons of sense for the Bears. He fits their defense. He'd be able to handle the nickel corner role, allowing Kyler Gordon to move outside, where he had far more success as a rookie last season.
It would make an already pretty good secondary even better. If the Bears could then retool their defensive line to improve the pass rush, this defense could become something to watch. Matt Eberflus would love nothing better. Moore isn't too old. He is squarely in his prime. Signing him to a three-year deal close to what he was making in Indy is something Chicago can easily afford.
