It appears Matt Nagy was not happy with how the offensive game plan unfolded last week against the New Orleans Saints. While many blame him for that, the reality is the Chicago Bears head coach absolutely did not aim for the offense to set a franchise record with just seven rushing attempts the entire game. To be fair there were numerous times during run-pass option plays where quarterback Mitch Trubisky admits he should've handed the ball off.
Apparently that game had a profound effect on Nagy's plans for the upcoming contest against the Los Angeles Chargers. According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, the coach met with his offense and made it clear that what happened against New Orleans was "horse shit." They were not going to let something like that happen again. This offense is going to get serious about running the football more than ever, even if he has to force-feed David Montgomery and Tarik Cohen to do it.
Matt Nagy is finally embracing class Bears football
The fact is the Bears have likely reached a realization on offense. Mitch Trubisky is either not ready or capable of putting things on his shoulders. He is good for making a few nice throws a game, but not much beyond that. Running the ball has always been the key to effective offense in Chicago and it's high time they got back to that. The Bears gave up a lot to secure Montgomery in the draft and they've criminally underused him thus far this year. It's high time that changed.
The timing might be good as well. Los Angeles has one of the weaker run defenses in the league. One that has allowed an average of 137 yards on the ground over the past three weeks. If the Bears wanted to keep Philip Rivers on the bench and ease pressure on the defense, this is the way to do it. It's nice to at least hear that Nagy is sick and tired of the lack of balance on offense. The time has come for a strong commitment to changing that.
