Matt Nagy's Faith In Mitchell Trubisky Paid Off On Sunday

Sunday's Bears game was a tale of two teams as at one point of the third quarter, as it appeared the Bears' season was over as soon as it began. One quarter later, the team was victorious as embattled quarterback Mitchell Trubisky led the team on a 21-point fourth-quarter comeback. With the season and Trubisky's future on the line, Bears head coach Matt Nagy stayed with his quarterback when no one appeared otherwise. Trubisky had been ineffective as he had only passed for 155 yards through three quarters, and the team started the game 0-6 on third-down conversions. The fourth-year quarterback was terrible in the first half as he was inaccurate and missed open receivers as the calls for his benching grew louder during the game.

When the defense gave up 10 points to start the third quarter giving the Lions a 23-6 lead, many felt that the Bears' defense had quit on their quarterback as there appeared to be no fight to stop the Lions offense. Nagy could have lost his team very easily by leaving Trubisky in, and the offense not had a comeback.

Furthermore, no one would have blamed Nagy for benching Trubisky for veteran quarterback Nick Foles who has extensive experience with the offensive game plan. The third-year Bears head coach stood by his quarterback, and his faith paid off. Nagy did not overreact to the struggles Trubisky had early on and gave his quarterback the benefit of the doubt.

Fans and analysts overlooked the fact that two of Trubisky's passes were on target to newly acquired tight end Jimmy Graham who mistimed his jump on both throws leading to incomplete passes. The other throw many were critical of was a deep throw over the middle to Ted Ginn Jr. that was behind the receiver. Nagy could have looked at that pass as a reason to pull his quarterback but didn't let it phase him as an indictment on Trubisky.

In the final quarter, Trubisky came alive as he more touchdown passes than he had incomplete passes. Where the Bears quarterback misses several easy throws in the first half, he made some brilliant throws that required utmost accuracy.
