All the big names have been discussed to death at this point. We know all the major quarterbacks the Chicago Bears will look at in free agency come this March. So maybe it might be time to adjust the lens a bit. What about potentially overlooked names who might actually have more upside than people think. It's not totally crazy. There have been a number of instances where no-name former backups left their original teams and went on to become productive starters elsewhere.
Tyrod Taylor, Ryan Fitzpatrick, Matt Schaub, and Matt Cassel are some examples. Is there anybody in the 2020 class of free agent quarterbacks who might fit this description? In fact there is. His name is Nate Sudfeld.
For those who aren't familiar with him, here's a recap. Sudfeld was a 6th round pick of the Washington Redskins back in 2016. He lasted a year there as a third-string backup. In 2017, he was waived and quickly scooped up by the Philadelphia Eagles where he has remained as a backup ever since. The 6'6 California-native was a successful starter at Indiana. His final year there saw him throw for over 3,500 yards with 27 touchdowns and just seven interceptions.
Draft experts were at least encouraged by his potential four years ago.
"Comfortable operating in timing based systems and shows ability to throw with desired anticipation. Ball usually comes out on time. Able to expedite throws when pressure finds him early. Feels pressure and gets rid of the ball over taking the sack. Makes catchable, accurate throws from the pocket. Shows off NFL arm when he steps and drives to target. Does not fear the field side throws and has arm and accuracy to make them."
Chicago Bears have connections to Sudfeld
All of this is worth mentioning because now the Bears have ties to Sudfeld who will be a free agent soon. John DeFilippo coached him during the 2017 Super Bowl season in Philadelphia. The team is looking for more depth. Perhaps somebody who might take advantage of an opportunity to compete for Mitch Trubisky's job. Sudfeld was never going to get that chance with Carson Wentz in place with the Eagles.
Thus far in his limited opportunities, the kid has looked solid. In four preseason runs, he's thrown for 1,299 yards with nine touchdowns and three interceptions. He's also appeared in three regular season games, going 20-of-25 for 156 yards and a touchdown. Nobody is saying he's going to transform into a world-beater. That said if the Bears are looking for cheap options who appear ready for an opportunity to compete for the top job?
Sudfeld has been molded in the exact type of offense they run. He's big, strong, and 27-years old. His time, if it ever comes, is now.
