When looking at possible free agents the Chicago Bears could sign, it's always important to look past the big names and consider others that might fit what this team needs. In doing so, we must remember specific criteria. They should be of a certain age range (below 30 years old). Having a passion for football is obvious, and it wouldn't hurt if they meet certain size and length requirements. When examining the array of players available next month, there is one name that stands out.
Most common fans probably don't know about A'Shawn Robinson. They could be forgiven for this. Across seven seasons in the NFL, he has only seven sacks. People ignore your existence when you don't have success rushing the passer as a defensive lineman. Robinson's value instead comes from his ability to stop the run. Since arriving in 2016, he has built a reputation as one of the better nose tackles in the league. He was instrumental to the Rams' Super Bowl run in 2021, anchoring their 6th-ranked run defense.
Considering the Bears were 31st against the run last season, adding Robinson to the mix would make perfect sense.
The Chicago Bears can easily afford Robinson.
He is 28 years old this year, so he isn't over the hill. His contract with the Rams was for two years at $17 million, averaging out to $8.5 million per year. Presuming he commands something close to that again, the Bears should have no problem giving it to him. They have close to $100 million in salary cap space. Handing Robinson that kind of money would be the equivalent of pocket change. His arrival would instantly boost one of the worst defensive fronts in the NFL. Yes, rushing the passer is vital, but stopping the run must come first.
Robinson also fits the Matt Eberflus profile. He is 6'4 with 34-inch arms. The size and length are there. His power is undeniable, and his locker room presence is unquestioned. His teammates love him. The defensive tackle has won everywhere he's been. He won a national championship at Alabama and a Super Bowl in L.A. The Chicago Bears need a lot more of that expectation of winning in their locker room. Don't be surprised if they're quick to bring him in when the market opens.
