Don't know the name Cam Phillips? That's okay. Most people didn't a few weeks ago. He was another of many former undrafted free agents trying to make their way into the NFL. Rather than continue that frustrating process though, he decided to take an opportunity with the new XFL. What did he have to lose? The Houston Roughnecks soon called his name and now he's the best wide receiver in the league. No doubt somebody the Chicago Bears have taken notice of.
The Roughnecks currently sit atop the XFL with a 3-0 record and Phillips is a primary reason why along with quarterback P.J. Walker. In just three games, the 6'0 receiver from Virginia Tech has caught 20 passes for 324 yards. Seven of those catches have gone for touchdowns. It's clear this 24-year old can play.
The Bears for their part have every reason to be interested. Their own wide receiver situation is precarious. Taylor Gabriel was just cut. Anthony Miller had offseason shoulder surgery. Javon Wims and Riley Ridley are unproven. Cordarrelle Patterson is more of a gadget weapon. They badly need depth behind Allen Robinson.
Chicago Bears could get Phillips for cheap
So who exactly is Phillips? A native of North Carolina, he spent four years in college. He topped 900 yards receiving as a junior and a senior, scoring 12 touchdowns in that span. The Buffalo Bills signed him as an undrafted free agent. He spent time on their practice squad in both 2018 and 2019, cracking the active roster only once during a two-week span. After being waived last August, he made his way to the XFL.
Now he's on pace for 1,080 yards and 23 touchdowns for the Roughnecks. Not to mention a possible league championship. Nobody is saying he is going to return and suddenly transform into Jerry Rice. However, it's clear he has ability. Enough to warrant giving him an opportunity in training camp this summer. If the Bears can get a solid depth option by securing his services, it would already make the offense better than it was last season.
