Heart and desire were never in question with Mitch Trubisky. He's played through struggles and pain. He works hard to get better. Yet it's hard to deny that that 25-year old hasn't found any answers. His 2019 season has been a colossal disappointment. Through 10 games he has nine touchdown passes and is on course to finish with the fewest rushing yards of his career. The offense isn't just middling. It's among the worst in the NFL and his failures to consistently execute are a big reason why.
So when Trubisky didn't go out onto the field for the final drive of the game, most believed head coach Matt Nagy had finally seen enough. The former #2 overall pick had been benched. It was soon reported that Trubisky was dealing with a hip issue that he suffered towards the end of the first half. For his own part, Nagy wasn't aware of its full extent until a few series before the decision to pull him was made. A lot of people aren't buying that explanation.
The reaction of Trubisky after the event took place certainly reinforces the conspiracy that he was benched. He looked heartbroken and dejected. This carried over into his press conference. His head was down the entire time and there was such a woodenness to his answers. It felt like a quarterback who knew his time had finally come.
Mitch Trubisky has simply run out of time
Facts are facts. Most draft picks usually show what they are by the third season of their careers. Trubisky has shown that he's a good athlete with a great personality but a decided lack of feel for the quarterback position. He can make some impressive throws from time to time, but when it comes to seizing control of an offense and being in true control? He just doesn't have it. Nagy has done everything possible to simplify the offense for him but nothing has worked.
GM Ryan Pace has tried to urge patience with the young man but it's becoming clear that no amount of waiting to will change anything. Trubisky has regressed and there's no reason to think that will change. This team needs a functional quarterback. It feels like even a game manager would have more success at this point and Trubisky can't even be that. Aside from being inconsistent, now he's developed a reputation for getting injured with two shoulder issues and the hip.
He certainly looked like a man whose career as "the guy" came to an end on Sunday night.
