The Chicago Bears training camp really got started on Monday with their first padded practices. It's no surprise things started slow. There weren't many live drills of 11-on-11. Still, it appears the offense and defense got their share of valuable reps in. While most of the attention was unsurprisingly on the quarterbacks, it appears the revamped tight ends group also seemed to stand out.
The team posted their first batch of highlights from the practice. One thing that stood out immediately? A lot of tight ends were making the catches in drills. It started right away with an impressive grab from Jesper Horsted who was hit while making it. Jimmy Graham had a couple of smooth snags of his own. Not to be outdone, Demetrius Harris also had a few moments of his own.
As for rookie Cole Kmet? Word is he had his "Welcome to the NFL" moment early in practice. It came when he was flagged for a false start. Something that earned a lot of razzing from his teammates. Just something he will learn as camp moves forward.
Chicago Bears tight ends likely loving Nick Foles
One other piece of evidence that emerged from the video? The man often throwing to the tight ends was Nick Foles. This shouldn't be a surprise. Throughout most of his career, the veteran has built a reputation for utilizing that position a lot. While Mitch Trubisky was often furthering his connection to Allen Robinson, Foles was finding the tight ends.
If he ends up winning the competition, expect this trend to hold into the regular season. Graham, Kmet and the others will see a lot more action than last year. Hopefully, this new group can take a substantial leap forward from last year. It almost has to given the 2019 version was arguably the worst ever in franchise history.
