Necessity is the mother of invention as they say. The NFL draft is currently in a strange limbo. Due to the ongoing battle against COVID-19, the live event plans for Las Vegas were scrapped. Now the league is trying to decide what to do with it since nobody wants to outright cancel the highly-anticipated offseason show. Chicago Bears fans are certainly among them. After seeing what GM Ryan Pace has done in free agency, they're anxious to know the next phase of his plan.
According to Sam Farmer of the Los Angeles Times, the league has an idea of what they want to do. It's still in the early planning stages and things can change. However, the outline appears to be in place. If it comes together it could be a unique and rather fascinating experience.
"The NFL is not commenting publicly about what’s in the works, but according to two individuals with knowledge of the discussions, the current plans call for some type of studio setting with cut-ins from the headquarters of the teams making the selection at a given time."
Chicago Bears fans could see their team call in picks live
That would be a fun twist. Being able to see Pace himself actually talking with his staff and Matt Nagy and calling in picks. It's something that is typically not done because teams prefer privacy in those situations. Due to the extreme circumstances though, an exception might be made just this one time. That would certainly increase the appeal of watching the draft play out.
As of now, the action remains on schedule for April 23rd. It doesn't sound like the NFL plans to deviate from. So odds are they'll reveal the exact details in the coming weeks. By then we should have a better idea of how the Bears will attack it.
