Who is Mitch Trubisky? Here it is in Year 4 and people still aren't quite sure. The 26-year old hasn't lived up to his billing as the #2 overall pick in 2017. Especially when compared to Patrick Mahomes and Deshaun Watson. At the same time, he's 29-20 in his career to this point. His passer rating over the past three seasons is 90.1. Easily the highest of any Bears quarterback in a three-year span in the Super Bowl era.
Nobody is saying the guy is perfect. Far from it. That said, is he being judged too harshly. Being so closely linked to Mahomes and also playing in the same division as Aaron Rodgers certainly doesn't help his public image. Even so, nobody can call him a true "bust" at this point. A disappointment? That's fair but he's had too much success to be considered an outright failure.
This brings up the hot button topic of the moment.
Has he done enough to be given another chance? Trubisky's contract is about to expire. The Bears didn't pick up his 5th-year option for obvious reasons this past offseason. It was hoped that decision along with competition from Nick Foles might motivate the quarterback to play better. While it didn't go exactly as planned, that plan was somewhat of a success. Trubisky is playing arguably the best football of his career the past month. Many around the NFL are starting to think the Bears should consider bringing him back. Jeremy Fowler of ESPN spoke to an NFC executive on the subject. He believes the QB may not be who be Chicago wanted, but he might end up being what they need."He is what he is, but he's got talent," that exec said. "He's not Aaron Rodgers or [Patrick] Mahomes, but he's a good QB. He only started one year [at UNC]. You're not going to win throwing the ball 50 times a game in Chicago. You need a good running game, a good defense and a steady quarterback."https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=On0rI7zFRRg&ab_channel=JacksonKruegerSportsProductions
Maybe Mitch Trubisky can be the Bears' Alex Smith
Yes, he's not the franchise savior many wanted but Trubisky is showing he is at least more competent than a lot of other quarterbacks in the league. Especially when utilized properly. Perhaps the Bears can craft a vision around him similar to what the Kansas City Chiefs did with Smith. Nobody ever accused the former #1 overall pick of being a star. What he became for them was a steady hand in the storm. People say the words "game manager" as if they're laced with poison these days but such QB types have a place in the NFL. Smith never had more than 23 TD passes in a season for Kansas City from 2013 to 2016. Yet his efficiency and leadership allowed them to make the playoffs three times in four years and never post a losing record. It also allowed them another advantage. To focus on building the rest of the roster.
By not having to constantly devote top resources to the QB position, the Chiefs basically built the foundation of their current success during those four years. Eric Fisher, Travis Kelce, Chris Jones, and Tyreek Hill were all drafted in that span. Finally, when the opportunity arrived, they seized the chance to trade up for Mahomes in 2017. The rest is history. Maybe the Bears could use Mitch Trubisky the same way. Sign him to an affordable deal to hold the position down and focus on building the rest of the roster. Then when the time is right, they go after what they feel is a true franchise guy.Comments
