Ryan Poles proved last year that the Senior Bowl will factor heavily into his NFL draft decisions. With eight picks this year and the possibility more are coming via a trade down from #1 overall, it's a safe assumption some prominent names from the event will end up in a Chicago Bears uniform. Determining who is almost impossible. However, there are some names that may stand out over others. One area to focus on would be the offensive line. It's no secret the Bears need better blocking.
There were plenty of encouraging performers in Mobile. When it comes to the right fit, Kevin Fishbain of The Athletic asked around about Chicago. One NFL scout had a specific name in mind.
"One scout cited North Dakota State’s Cody Mauch as being the type of player who has the tenacity the Bears could use. He played left tackle in college but spent some time at center on Wednesday."
Mauch was a name mentioned several times over the course of the week by those at the event. While he had some up-and-down moments, his practices were mostly positive. People loved his aggression, technique, and ability to play multiple positions. The key will be figuring out where he belongs in the NFL.
Mauch does fit what the Chicago Bears seek.
Poles said he's looking for more violence from his linemen moving forward. There is no denying that Mauch displayed those tendencies for years at North Dakota State. He's also a very good athlete, demonstrating an ability to handle speed rushers and get out in space as a run blocker. His physical traits are tailor-made for a zone-blocking scheme like Chicago's. The problem is he doesn't have much of a future at his original position of left tackle. Not with arms that barely clear 32 inches.
This is why many see him as a guard in the NFL or, even more likely, a center. The Chicago Bears need an upgrade in the middle. Lucas Patrick couldn't stay healthy. Sam Mustipher is nothing more than a backup. Mauch could unlock some serious potential with his athletic prowess and also be that tone-setter with his nasty streak. Current projections have him going somewhere in the 3rd round this April. The Bears hold the 54th and 65th picks in that range. His name might come up.
