Would the Chicago Bears draft a quarterback early in 2020? The debate on this topic is surprisingly strong given the obvious concerns about Mitch Trubisky. Some think it's a waste of time since a rookie QB is unlikely to help them win next season. Others think GM Ryan Pace must be proactive in trying to fix the most important position on his entire roster. Even if that means sacrificing one of his few high draft choices to do it. This is why the name Jake Fromm constantly comes up.
The three-year starter from Georgia has been connected to Chicago since the pre-draft process began. There are a number of reasons for this. He's among the most experienced in the 2020 class, which means he could probably play immediately if drafted. He's known for being a cerebral player who can read defenses and work well from the pocket. Most of all he went to Georgia, a program Pace has favored over the year.
Yet many believe Fromm is overrated. Despite his intelligence and competitiveness, he's quite average in terms of physical traits from size to arm strength and mobility. His upside is limited. However, when ESPN polled nine NFL scouts to rank their top five quarterbacks in this class? Fromm tied with media darling Jordan Love for fourth.
One made it clear teams would regret overthinking his shortcomings.
"I think he'll be a first-rounder. I really liked him two years ago. But he struggled a little this past year, maybe tried to do too much. He also didn't play as well in big games."
Jake Fromm did what was asked of him at Georgia
People get on Fromm for not being more prolific during his time with the Bulldogs. Yet it's not like this was entirely within his control. Georgia has historically been a program that loves to run the football and they had a stable packed with quality backs throughout his tenure at QB. He was never the focal point of the offense. Yet despite this, he still managed to throw for over 8,200 yards with 78 touchdowns and just 18 interceptions across three seasons.
This wasn't in some second-rate conference either. This was done in the SEC, the cream of the college football crop. To lose just seven games in three years? That is something that cannot and should not be overlooked.
One of the things about the NFL draft process is it's a time when teams so often become overly obsessed with physical traits. Yes, it's true that athletic talent often separates the great players from everybody else, but the process is also flawed. That prioritization makes it so easy to miss out on good football players who might not have all the tools in the box. Fromm could be one such example.
Sometimes all a guy needs is a chance.
