Anybody who has followed Nick Foles closely enough in recent years will understand this. The Chicago Bears traded for him because of his experience and talent, first and foremost. His Super Bowl ring proved he could play at a high level. The perfect guy who could come in during a shortened training camp and give Mitch Trubisky a legitimate battle for the starting job.
Yet the physical aspects weren't the only part they wanted. They also sought Foles the person. It doesn't matter who you talk to. Teammates and coaches say the same thing. Foles the player is good but he's a 10x better person. An incredible teammate who sets an example in everything he does.
That reality was on display as the competition came to a close. Nagy brought the veteran QB into his office to give him the news. After 90 minutes of talking, Foles wasn't bitter. In fact, he made an incredible request of the head coach before their conversation concluded.
He asked if he could call Trubisky and personally congratulate him. A moment the young QB reportedly cherished.
Nick Foles also knows the battle isn't over just yet
Foles vowed from the start that his job was to do whatever necessary to make the Bears a winning team. He'd compete but also do everything he could to help Trubisky improve. Not a lot of guys would take such an approach. Then again, this isn't his first time in such a situation either. Foles understands better than most that his time could still come.
Back in 2013, he was in competition with Michael Vick for the starting job with the Philadelphia Eagles. Vick initially won the job. However, after a 2-3 start to the season followed by an injury, he was forced to the sideline. Foles came in and ended up going 8-2 down the stretch, pushing the Eagles into the playoffs.
He may have lost this round, but he knows a QB competition is never really over during a season. He just has to keep working hard and stay ready.
