It's a feeling of elation for most college players when they finally get the phone call that they're about to be drafted into the NFL. It is a culmination of years of sacrifice and hard work. Noah Sewell is no different. The Oregon linebacker went through some tough challenges. After a stellar season in 2021, many felt he was in the 1st round conversation. However, the program changed the coaching staff going into 2022 and the defensive scheme along with it. His productivity took a dip. As a result, he fell all the way to the 5th round before the Chicago Bears snagged him.
That didn't dampen his excitement too much. He was thrilled when he got the call from GM Ryan Poles. He was going to an organization famous for its linebacker lineage and running a system installed by a head coach who played the position himself. It is as close to an ideal setup as he could ask for. However, the thrilling moment came with some awkwardness. According to Poles in an interview with Cynthia Frelund of NFL Network, Penei Sewell, Noah's brother and right tackle for the Detroit Lions, was in the same room when the pick went down.
Suffice it to say the reaction was what you'd expect from a competitive family.
Noah Sewell continues a long tradition of family in football.
It isn't the first time brothers have found themselves in the NFL at the same time. There are many great examples of this. Travis Kelce and Jason Kelce just clashed in the Super Bowl. J.J. Watt and T.J. Watt played for Houston and Pittsburgh. Peyton Manning and Eli Manning took turns beating Tom Brady in the playoffs for several years. Nick Bosa and Joey Bosa are both dominating on the west coast as pass rushers. However, this situation is a little different because the Sewell brothers find themselves division rivals.
That means their meetings won't be infrequent as other such brother duos. They will see each other twice a year. It could get heated between the two, especially if the Lions and Bears end up competing for the division crown now that Aaron Rodgers is out of the picture. No doubt Noah Sewell feels he has more to prove. He is the younger brother of the two and was drafted far later than Penei (7th overall). Chicago can expect him to come in with extra intensity.
