It remains puzzling why Jason La Canfora is still employed by CBS Sports at this point. Not only does he show a clear bias towards certain teams, but the vast majority of his predictions courtesy of his "sources" have proven to be complete garbage. It seems his favorite team to target for his pessimistic viewpoints is the Chicago Bears.
It isn't clear exactly why La Canfora chose them for his frequent attacks, but such is the state of things. Every time Mitch Trubisky makes a mistake, he's quick to fire off a tweet saying it was a catastrophic blunder to draft him. Then Trubisky goes to the Pro Bowl despite playing just 14 games. He predicted the Bears would finish last again in the NFC North in 2018.
Surprise, surprise. They won the division after going 12-4. Their best record since 2006. So if anything, Bears fans should be thrilled for the next time he makes a statement about the team's imminent demise. It just so happens they didn't have to wait long. La Canfora delivered as promised in his latest article, declared the Minnesota Vikings would win the NFC North.
"They dealt with mental health and physical health issues on defense in 2018, but Mike Zimmer knows the bar must be set higher on that side of the ball this year, and I expect them to be more consistent and menacing. Give Cousins a few more leads and good things happen. I have serious concerns about the new power structure in Green Bay and the Aaron Rodgers/Matt Lafleur coupling could be perilous, and the Bears are the poster boys for 2019 regression to me (more on that next week)."
Chicago Bears have no reason to fear anybody in the NFC
It's likely La Canfora is basing this entire thing on Trubisky. He's never trusted the young QB and believes he's destined to fail. The Bears had the best defense in the NFL last season. That isn't likely to be the case again, which means Trubisky and the offense need to step up and pull their weight if they wish to get back to the playoffs.
To say they can't do this is simply untrue. The Bears went from 29th in scoring in 2017 to 9th in 2018 under new head coach Matt Nagy. Now the depth chart is considerably deeper than it was last season and most of the starters who are returning are bringing experience in the system to the table. To say nothing of good health in the cases of Kyle Long and Anthony Miller.
Trubisky himself showed significant progress towards the end of the season. He still has work to do, sure. Yet to dismiss his improvement outright is both unfair and keeping in line with exactly who La Canfora is. A man with an agenda.
