Mitch Trubisky has plenty of critics out there. Critics, trolls, and outright haters. Perhaps no entity has been more consistently negative on the Chicago Bears quarterback than Pro Football Focus. The analytics website notorious for their controversial grading system provided a perfect example when they left Trubisky off their rankings of the top 5 Bears offensive players from the win over the Dallas Cowboys last week.
Remember that the quarterback threw three touchdowns and ran for another.
They seem to genuinely delight in prodding Bears fans whenever they're criticized for their assessments whenever he happens to play well as he has the past couple of weeks. So one can imagine how difficult it was for them to hold a discussion about the Bears going into Lambeau Field against the Green Bay Packers and the conversation of the quarterbacks came up.
Rather than do the easy thing and lean into the Aaron Rodgers narrative, they seemed to literally feel physical pain when they admitted that Trubisky has outplayed the future Hall of Famer over the past few weeks.
It's true: Mitch Trubisky has performed better than Rodgers
If one were to go purely by the stats, they'd laugh at this notion. Rodgers has six touchdowns with no interceptions the past three weeks and a 99.7 passer rating. Ttrubisky has seven touchdowns and four interceptions with a 99.1 rating. So how could they say Rodgers has been worse?
By simply using their eyes.
Even though the Packers are 2-1 in the previous three games, they haven't exactly looked dominant during that time. Rodgers included. In an ugly trip to San Francisco, he threw for just 104 on 33 attempts in a 37-8 defeat. A week later he feasted on a really bad New York Giants defense for four touchdown passes and seemed to regain his usual form. Then upon returning home to Green Bay last week? He looked rather mortal against the Washington Redskins, throwing for just 195 yards.
Keep in mind Sam Darnold hung 293 yards and four touchdowns on them just three weeks prior.
Trubisky has both thrown for more yards than Rodgers but also has a higher completion percentage (62.77 to 70). Nobody is saying any sort of torch is getting passed, but it's wild to see guys who have done everything they can to avoid praising the Bears quarterback at every turn suddenly make such an admission.
