It's no secret the Chicago Bears are going to be in the market for help at tight end in 2020. That's pretty much a given when the entire position group delivers less than 300 yards and two touchdowns in 14 games. If anybody wanted to start with reasons the offense was terrible in 2019, they must start there. GM Ryan Pace though will be faced with a dilemma. He won't exactly have the resources available to make a significant move at the position. Not without sacrifice needs elsewhere.
This could mean he may try to find a more bargain-oriented solution. Somebody who won't cost much to acquire but could still give the Bears even a modest upgrade at the position. If this is the case, then there is on man who fits the profile well. His name is Darren Fells. The veteran tight end has made waves this year with the Houston Texans, fast becoming one of their most overlooked contributors with seven touchdown catches this season. While he failed to add to that tally against Tampa Bay on Saturday, he did make his presence known.
On what was a sluggish afternoon for the Houston offense, Fells made one of the biggest catches of the day. A 10-yard grab on 3rd and 7 that put the Texans at the Buccaneers 1-yard line. They scored on the next play. This would prove crucial as they wound up holding on to win 23-20. Settling for a field goal there might've ended up costing them the game.
Chicago Bears could use Fells as temporary bandage
The vital key in all of this is that Fells is 34-years old. He is not what one would call a long-term solution to the Bears' problem. He would be a temporary fix. Probably for no more than a season. However, this isn't necessarily a bad thing. Pace doesn't have the resources right now to fix every single problem on the roster with long-term guys. Not without a ton of good luck. Sometimes a GM has to bite the bullet and put a bandage on the problem for later.
Fells can be that. He's a solid veteran who has respectable blocking skills and is proving himself as a red zone threat yet again this season. Nobody is saying he would be the only answer the Bears seek at the position but adding him at an affordable price (probably between $1-2 million) as part of a package? That would be something that could definitely help the offense.
