It's not certain what the Chicago Bears plan to do at quarterback. The only one they have under contract at this point is Mitch Trubisky. While GM Ryan Pace made it clear they expect him to be the starter this year, he did leave the door open for new additions. Knowing how Pace has operated in the past, it wouldn't be a surprise if he took a two-pronged approach to the problem. That is to say, signing a veteran free agent followed by a possible pick in the NFL draft.
One name that has been connected to the Bears almost from the jump is Jake Fromm. A three-year standout at Georgia, he had a highly productive college career that included a trip to the national championship game. While derided by many for his average physical traits including limited arm strength and size, he overcame all of that with a great work ethic and undeniable competitiveness.
Many still think he could sneak into the 1st round if things go well for him down at the Scouting Combine in Indianapolis. Unfortunately, things didn't get off to the best start. Before he even could perform in any drills, Fromm revealed an issue regarding his throwing hand.
Chicago Bears could get Fromm cheaper than expected
A revelation like this comes down to perception. Hand size is one of the more divisive topics when it comes to quarterbacks. It's feared that QBs with smaller hands have issues gripping the football. This leads to more fumbles and more erratic passes. This is why teams typically look for them to have an average hand size of around 9.5 inches. So when a guy drops below nine inches flat? It's a cause for concern.
This revelation on Fromm only adds to the concerns about his physical drawbacks. In addition to being relatively shorter than preferred and boasting an average arm, now he's confirmed to have small hands too. While not catastrophic to his career, this could lead to a lot of teams deciding that he just isn't worth the risk of a top 50 pick. That means he might end up experiencing a drop.
Not just to the 2nd round either. Maybe even the 3rd. This could be potentially good news for the Bears. If they like Fromm, which isn't hard to consider, then they might be able to trade down from their #50 pick in the 2nd and still have a pretty good chance of getting the QB.
Something to think about as the process continues to unfold.
