The Chicago Bears will play the Carolina Panthers at Soldier Field this Sunday. It marks the first time the two teams have met since 2014 when the Bears fell in Carolina 31-24. Both teams are difficult to gauge. The Bears are 2-4 but coming off a big win. The Panthers are 4-2 but coming off a tough loss. This game feels like it could be a pivot point. If nothing else it allowed the Bears media to catch up with Thomas Davis.
The Pro Bowl outside linebacker is one of the true good guys in the NFL. He's done loads of charity work over his long career, winning Walter Payton Man of the Year honors in 2014. All this in addition to being a tremendous player on the field. He's an intelligent man who knows football, so getting his opinion on anything is well worth it.
To the surprise of many the primary subject that came up with him was Bears rookie quarterback Mitch Trubisky. Turns out Davis is quite impressed by his exploits thus far. So much so that he envisions a notable veteran as a comparison. (continue to next page)
Indeed the two are almost spitting images of each other. Same size and build with similar athletic traits. Mitch may be a bit faster. Aaron has the bigger hands. Both are lauded for their calm under pressure and unusually accurate passing. It remains to be seen if the Bears can build a proper roster around Trubisky as the Packers have Rodgers.
Davis seems to think the qualities are there. Just another reason for Bears fans to get excited about this kid.
Thomas Davis sees lots of Aaron Rodgers in Trubisky's game
Experts have thrown some interesting comparisons around for Trubisky since before the draft in April. Some saw Rich Gannon. Others saw Ryan Tannehill or Matthew Stafford. However the most repeated name in the past few months is Green Bay Packers superstar Aaron Rodgers. Davis, unprompted added his name to the list of people who see that connection as well.Of course it's not fair to say that Trubisky is the next Rodgers. They aren't exactly the same type of player. At the same time they do share certain similar physical traits. Davis was asked what about the rookie reminded him of the two-time MVP.
It's not totally insane. NFL experts have seen the similarities even before Trubisky got into the league. In fact they liked to do comparisons during the scouting combine. People were curious who the machines would spit out as a Trubisky doppelganger. No doubt they were shocked when the answer came up.
