Ran Carthon? Get To Know The Latest Bears GM Candidate

If Chicago Bears fans didn't want to take George McCaskey at his word that the GM search would be thorough, they sure are by now. By the end of Tuesday morning, the team had seven confirmed candidates with requested interviews. Make that eight. Albert Breer of the MMQB revealed that the Bears are hoping to meet with San Francisco 49ers director of pro personnel Ran Carthon. An interesting name many might not know about. The son of former New York Giants two-time champion Maurice Carthon, Ran was a standout running back at Florida in the early 2000s. He wasn't good enough to last in the NFL though, making it just three seasons. By 2007 it was time to consider a career shift. So Carthon chose to become a scout, joining the Atlanta Falcons the next year. It didn't take him long to rise through the ranks. After just four seasons, he was scooped up by the St. Louis Rams to become their director of player personnel.

The young man did some really good work.

Together with GM Les Snead, Carthon helped acquire some excellent football players including Aaron Donald, Todd Gurley, Michael Brockers, Janoris Jenkins, Rob Havenstein, Jared Goff, Trumaine Johnson, and Lamarcus Joyner. That success led to the 49ers poaching him to become their director of pro personnel. A job he has held since 2017. Given some of the acquisitions they've made since it's not hard to see why. Headlining the list are Robbie Gould, Kyle Juszczyk, Richard Sherman, Jimmy Garoppolo, Trent Brown, Weston Richburg, Laken Tomlinson, and Dee Ford. All of whom played pivotal roles in helping the 49ers reach the Super Bowl in 2019. Ran Carthon has worked both the college and pro sides of the scouting job quite well. He's served under three successful GMs that got their teams to a Super Bowl. So this is a pretty smart decision by the Bears to interview him.
