If Chicago Bears fans didn't want to take George McCaskey at his word that the GM search would be thorough, they sure are by now. By the end of Tuesday morning, the team had seven confirmed candidates with requested interviews. Make that eight. Albert Breer of the MMQB revealed that the Bears are hoping to meet with San Francisco 49ers director of pro personnel Ran Carthon. An interesting name many might not know about.
The son of former New York Giants two-time champion Maurice Carthon, Ran was a standout running back at Florida in the early 2000s. He wasn't good enough to last in the NFL though, making it just three seasons. By 2007 it was time to consider a career shift. So Carthon chose to become a scout, joining the Atlanta Falcons the next year. It didn't take him long to rise through the ranks. After just four seasons, he was scooped up by the St. Louis Rams to become their director of player personnel.
