Back in 2017, GM Ryan Pace planned to draft a quarterback. The Jay Cutler era was over and it was time to start fresh. After initial evaluations of the upcoming class, he quickly developed a liking for North Carolina's Mitch Trubisky. However, it was initially reported that he didn't want to press his views on anybody else. He wanted "consensus" from his front office and scouting department.
There was even a video documenting that. Remember? It came out shortly after the Bears selected Trubisky #2 overall. It showed Pace running through the list of evaluations from his front office members. All of them rated Trubisky as the #1 quarterback. It was the consensus the GM wanted to hear.

Here's the thing though. All of that may not have been the entire truth. Kalyn Kahler of Bleacher Report has continued to do in-depth work on that fateful draft. Her latest finding brought up some disturbing details.
Ryan Pace didn't have a consensus from everybody at all
It started with John Fox. Not only did the head coach have Trubisky rated as the 3rd-best QB in the class. He didn't want to take one at all. Where it gets even worse though is that Fox was hardly a man on an island. There were plenty of people within the organization who weren't on the Trubisky train."But Fox, a source said, didn't even want to take a quarterback at No. 3. Mike Glennon had just signed a generous three-year contract to be the Bears' starter. Headed into a win-or-get-fired third season as the head coach, Fox wanted the team to select LSU safety Jamal Adams, and most within the organization were under the impression Adams was going to be Pace's pick. Though Pace finally had looped Fox into the Trubisky plan that morning, many in the organization didn't find out about it until the Bears traded four picks to move up to No. 2 and the phone call was made to Trubisky. A source familiar with the situation says Fox was not alone in his contrary opinion about the quarterbacks. The love for Trubisky was "not unanimous" among personnel and coaching staff."This revelation confirms a theory people have bought into for a long time. Trubisky was not a Bears pick. He was a Pace pick. The GM had fallen in love with the kid and became outright determined to make him a Bear. Even if plenty of people were warning him it might be a huge mistake. Sound about right.
