If it wasn't official before, it certainly is now. After days of hearing rampant rumors that the Philadelphia Eagles are shopping former Pro Bowl quarterback Carson Wentz, ESPN insider Adam Schefter finally broke the news for real. Expectations are a deal of some kind will happen sooner than later. Most likely in the days following the Super Bowl on Sunday.
So if the Chicago Bears are aiming to make something happen as the rumors suggest, what sort of price tag are they looking at. Schefter can't be sure what it will end up being, but he knows what the Eagles want. According to his sources, Philadelphia has high expectations. So much in fact they believe they can get something similar to what Detroit got for Matthew Stafford.
The Eagles are said to be looking for, in the words of one well-placed source, "a Matthew Stafford package" in return for Wentz. The Lions traded Stafford to the Rams last weekend for a third-round pick this year, two future first-round picks and quarterback Jared Goff, the player selected directly in front of Wentz as the top two picks in the 2016 NFL draft.
Would the Bears dare give up something like that?
Unlikely. Stafford was coming off another strong season in 2020. Wentz just finished his worst as a pro, which resulted in him being benched. Current rumors persist that the Eagles are hoping for a 1st round pick and an extra pick of some kind. It's not hard to imagine GM Ryan Pace, ever the aggressive type and also a well-known fan of Wentz would be more than willing to offer that. Schefter confirmed that the two teams in the race at the moment are the Bears and Indianapolis Colts. No surprise since both have strong connections to the 28-year old QB. Other teams have checked in but it doesn't feel like this market is nearly as strong as the one for Stafford was. So it's possible the Bears are trying to piece together an offer that avoids giving up the 20th pick. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G3NyqpT-V84&ab_channel=ESPNAdam Schefter revelation paints a clear picture
The Eagles are either delusional or they're trying to dissuade teams from pursuing Wentz by setting the price tag so. Initial word is that demand was met with more than a few "dial tones." Nobody in their right mind would trade two 1st round picks for a quarterback coming off a season where he threw 16 TDs to 15 interceptions and had a well-documented falling out with his head coach. To say nothing of the questions about his work ethic.Right now it's the Bears and Colts according to Adam Schefter and that doesn't figure to change. They're the only ones with ties to Wentz. Both also have glaring needs at the quarterback position. It isn't likely another team will jump into the fray with anything substantial. If the Colts happen to back out? That would only aid the Bears who could then lower their offer to perhaps avoid giving up a 1st round pick at all.
