The Chicago Bears need any and all breaks they can find this Sunday if they want to somehow take down the New Orleans Saints. This opponent already beat them back in November at Soldier Field. This despite missing a number of key offensive pieces. Expectations are they will be close to fully healthy this time around and inside their beloved Superdome. That is a lot for a banged-up Bears defense to handle.
If they're going to have any sort of chance, they need the offense to step up. We're talking 25-30 points. For that to happen, Mitch Trubisky needs to have a big day. That is asking a lot these days. Though he's had his share of nice performances in the past month, he hasn't excellent set the field ablaze. Whenever confronted with quality pass defenses, he's struggled to get anything going through the air.
Luckily, he may have gotten an extra boost courtesy of the Saints injury report.
Breakout star defensive end Trey Hendrickson has been a revelation this season. He's second in the NFL with 13.5 sacks. Not to mention an additional 25 QB hits. The guy has been living in the opposing backfield all season. Now he won't be able to play due to a neck injury he recently suffered. This makes the Saints' pass rush noticeably thinner even though they still have Cameron Jordan. Former 1st round pick Marcus Davenport will have to step up. That hasn't been the case this year as he has just 1.5 sacks in 11 games. Jordan has 7.5. His quietest season since 2016. One shouldn't be fooled though. He had a sack and two QB hits in the last meeting against Chicago. Still, the Bears have one less headache to worry about.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3O-rkEYp7Xo&ab_channel=WhodatNation4L
Chicago Bears need Trubisky if they're going to have a chance
The last time their young quarterback played down in New Orleans was his rookie year of 2017. It was a forgettable afternoon as he went 14-of-32 for 163 yards and an interception. However, he should've had a big touchdown pass in that game to Zach Miller before the officials took away with a highly-questionable replay. The same play Miller's career ended on that horrific knee injury. One thing working in his favor this time is the lack of crowd noise. Aside from season ticket-holders, there won't be any fans in the building on Sunday. So it won't be nearly as loud as that dome can get. Will any of it be enough? Time will tell. Trubisky is coming off a tough afternoon against the Green Bay Packers who have a similarly built defense to New Orleans. One built around a strong pass rush and quality cover corners.Trubisky will need help to have a better performance this time.
A big game from David Montgomery on the ground would do the trick. He had 89 yards against the Saints in their last meeting. So it's not crazy to think he can replicate that performance. Odds are New Orleans will load the box to stop him and dare Trubisky to beat their coverages man-to-man. That means the Bears wide receivers will have to show they can get open. The Chicago Bears better hope they can.Comments
