The Chicago Bears have had one more miserable event happen to them after another this season. Especially over the past few weeks. They just found out Akiem Hicks has COVID-19 right after getting him back from a lengthy injury. Now as if the upcoming game against the Seattle Seahawks weren't meaningless enough, Bears fans got one last kick in the gut prior to their Christmas holiday.
According to head coach Matt Nagy, veteran quarterback Nick Foles will start the game on Sunday. Justin Fields suffered an ankle injury in the loss to Minnesota on Monday night and it hasn't progressed enough to where the team is comfortable throwing him out there. With Andy Dalton also nursing a groin issue, the only alternative remaining is Foles. He will likely be backed up by recent addition Ryan Willis.
Talk about hitting a new low.
This is rather unfortunate. While the Chicago Bears have been eliminated from the playoffs, fans could at least get some enjoyment out of watching Fields continue his steady progression at quarterback. There is a lot of promise in his future. Now they get to watch Foles instead. A player that likely may not be on the roster by next spring. This game has become about as meaningless as one possibly can this time of year. If Foles plays well and they win? It doesn't matter. All it does is hurt the Bears' draft position next April more than anything. If they lose? It is another wasted Sunday watching an offense that has induced migraines for years. The only things fans can do at this point is keep an eye on other young players. Most notably left tackle Teven Jenkins who had a strong showing against Minnesota earlier this week. The same goes for cornerback Thomas Graham Jr. on the defensive side. Somebody who has a lot of fans in the Pacific Northwest as an Oregon alum.
