The Chicago Bears have put their fans through quite the ringer for the past three months. After a remarkable 5-1 start to the season which featured double-digit comebacks and a huge upset of Tom Brady, they then embarked on a six-game losing streak. The largest seen in 18 years. Suddenly fans were convinced the team had fallen apart and George McCaskey would fire everybody. Starting with head coach Matt Nagy and GM Ryan Pace.
Then things got even weirder. Despite the massive letdown, the Bears went into Soldier Field two weeks ago and crushed the Houston Texans 36-7. Leading the charge was quarterback Mitch Trubisky who'd returned from the bench to resemble the player he was back in 2018. A week later? He helps engineer an upset of the Vikings in Minnesota. A game in which the offense scored 33 points. The most ever against a Mike Zimmer defense.
This has left fans confused more than anything.
Who exactly is this team? It's hard to determine whether they've actually turned a corner or are just feeding on a beneficial schedule. This is why questions linger about what McCaskey will do regarding their power structure. According to a source, the Bears chairman hasn't made any decision one way or another. He's been mostly silent on the subject up to this point. Pace and Nagy aren't safe, but they aren't fired yet either. It really does appear as if their fates depend on what happens over the next week and a half. If the Bears win out and make the playoffs? They could be back. If they don't? Changes could likely be coming. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ts_p3mN2R2s&ab_channel=DanWiedererGeorge McCaskey won't move until he has the complete picture
If anything, the past two weeks offer proof as to why McCaskey didn't yield to outside pressures. Yes, the losing streak was bad and he wasn't happy about it. At the same time, there was always the chance Nagy could rally the team down the stretch. There was always a chance some of the younger players Pace had drafted would start stepping up. This is exactly what has happened. David Montgomery has transformed into the workhorse back they envisioned. Paving the way are Sam Mustipher and Alex Bars, both undrafted free agents the GM signed last year. Fifth round rookie Darnell Mooney continues to stack up big plays. Third-year defensive tackle Bilal Nichols is emerging as a legitimate force. All of this is happening while the team showcased their unwillingness to let the season fade away.Like it or not, a case is building for Nagy and Pace to get another year.
George McCaskey is letting them see it through to the end. Once the dust has settled on their season, then he'll look at the overall picture and make a decision. That may not be the decisive action a lot of fans were hoping for but it does appear to have been the right one. Despite their missteps, the GM and head coach are showing signs they might still be growing. Enough to where patience with their plan is warranted. Expect these last two games to tell the storyComments
