Nick Foles is the latest arrival for the Chicago Bears at quarterback. His exact position with the team is up for debate. Is he the backup and competition for Mitch Trubisky or is he an outright replacement? There are rumors going both ways. Some even suggest that the team is quietly trying to trade Trubisky. Either way, it's clear enough that GM Ryan Pace and head coach Matt Nagy are intent on overhauling the position.
What is left to ask is will they consider adding somebody in the draft? While it's mostly been speculation to this point, there is an undercurrent of buzz that suggests they do indeed plan to make a move of some kind next month. One name in particular seems high on their board in Florida International standout James Morgan.
Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle revealed they've continued to keep close tabs on the fast-rising passer.
"An NFL area scout based in the Southeast said that Morgan has one of the three strongest arms in the draft and praised him for his intelligence and leadership.
Several NFL teams are closely vetting Morgan, who can't go on visits or work out privately due to the restrictions put in place during the coronavirus pandemic.
Among the teams doing extra homework on Morgan, according to NFL sources not authorized to speak publicly: his hometown Green Bay Packers, New England Patriots, Chicago Bears, Indianapolis Colts, Las Vegas Raiders, New York Giants, Buffalo Bills, New York Jets, and Miami Dolphins."
Ryan Pace and Matt Nagy began search last year
It became clear not too long ago that Pace and Nagy had started to gradually ramp up their search for more depth at quarterback last season. Gardner Minshew, the breakout rookie, stated that the Bears and Jaguars were the two teams that showed the most interest in him. Jacksonville ended up getting him in the 6th round. It's hard to know if Chicago would've grabbed him but didn't have their 5th round pick due to a prior trade.
Maybe Morgan will end up being their second attempt at finding that guy. It could prove difficult. The way his momentum has picked up lately makes one think he goes somewhere between the 3rd and 4th rounds. The Bears have no picks in that range. Only two 2nd rounders and then their 5th round pick. So if Pace wants to avoid grabbing Morgan in the 2nd but doesn't want to risk waiting until the 5th, then he might end up trading down to a spot he'd feel more comfortable, collecting extra picks in the process.
It will be interesting to see how they approach this.
