Chicago Bears GM Ryan Pace has done a fine job rebuilding his team. There were plenty of bumps along the way and probably more are still to come. Nevertheless the team looks like it's younger and more talented than they've been in years. The defense is running and hitting with ferocity. Jordan Howard and the offensive line are grinding opponents into submission. They even have a new quarterback that looks like the real deal.
If there is one area that he's failed to properly reload, it's wide receiver. Brandon Marshall was traded. Alshon Jeffery left in free agency. Kevin White has become a bust. In fairness most of the Pace moves have flopped to this point not because of talent but health. White and Cameron Meredith suffered season-ending injuries. Markus Wheaton can't stay healthy either.
It's clear he has some reshuffling to do on that part of the depth chart. With Trubisky in town that timetable has accelerated. Can he retool the unit quickly? How will he do it? The answer to those questions lay, as with most GMs, in his background. (continue to next page)
Ryan Pace wide receiver plan boils down to his Saintly heritage
It's clearer than ever what Pace is trying to do. He's trying to reconstruct the same type of roster that resulted in the 2009 New Orleans Saints Super Bowl championship. That makes sense. He saw that group get built from the ground up. He knows the blueprint and what to do. Everything up to this point has reflected that philosophy. Jordan Howard and Tarik Cohen are Deuce McCallister and Reggie Bush. Mitch Trubisky is Drew Brees. Akiem Hicks is Will Smith. Danny Trevathan is Jonathan Vilma. Eddie Jackson is Malcolm Jenkins. The similarities are striking. The last remaining obstacle short of the offensive head coach to match Sean Payton is the wide receivers. How did the Saints go about building that deep and diverse group that took the NFL by storm eight years ago? Learning that may give a glimpse into what Pace has planned.2009 Super Bowl champion New Orleans Saints
