If the Chicago Bears still weren't sure about Mitch Trubisky before, the game on Sunday against the Los Angeles Chargers removed any doubts. Trubisky had a myriad of chances to take over that game. He struck for a number of big pass plays, got decent protect whenever the Bears decided to respect Joey Bosa, and he had six chances at the end zone in goal-to-go situations. Yet he still came away with no touchdowns and another brutal interception.
What more do people have to see? Every week he exhibits the same problems. His footwork is erratic. He can't hit open receivers down the field. His decision-making is bad. Head coach Matt Nagy supports him in public but it's clear as day the man doesn't trust Trubisky at all with how he continues to call plays during games. He is trying to mask the quarterback and make things as easy for him as possible.
A lot of people believe the Bears are on the cusp of making a change, whether it's at the upcoming trade deadline or the end of the season. The big question is what will they do. Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune spoke to a national scout to painted a fairly clear picture of what their direction will probably be.
“They’re going to have a tough time getting eight quarterbacks at the Senior Bowl this year out of the senior class,” the national scout said. “It’s not a real quarterback-rich class. There’s a few that are pretty good, but you kind of wonder about them and they have holes too.”
Chicago Bears will likely aim for a veteran option in 2020
Football, like any other business, is about supply and demand. Teams have to understand when the supply is rich and when it is not. With the 2020 draft class looking a bit thin and then not having a 1st round pick? Their odds of finding a guy who can start for them immediately are low. On the other hand, it looks like free agency might be a bit richer in terms of options than normal. So logic dictates that is where the Bears will place their focus.
Among the possible options could include:
- Tom Brady
- Drew Brees
- Philip Rivers
- Eli Manning
- Teddy Bridgewater
- Marcus Mariota
- Jameis Winston
Obviously all of those guys won't end up being available but there is a chance 2-3 of them will be. That will give the Bears a strong opportunity to bolster the position. The key factor will be money. Even average veteran quarterbacks can cost a lot. GM Ryan Pace will have to do some unloading of contracts on the books to free cap space. Veterans like Kyle Long and Prince Amukamara look like obvious cuts with others being possibilities.
The Bears know they don't need a star under center. Even average would be enough to win football games at this point. Signing one of those guys as a veteran should be good enough for that.
