Senior Bowl Update Shows Luke Getsy Has Struck It Rich

The announcement came down that Luke Getsy would have the honor of coaching the American team at the 2023 Senior Bowl. This means the Chicago Bears offensive coordinator will get a chance to coach and interact with some of the top prospects in the upcoming draft. If he has any reasonable eye for talent, his scouting reports could prove enormous for the Bears come April. GM Ryan Poles has already made it clear he doesn't mind drafting Senior Bowl standouts, as Velus Jones, Braxton Jones, and Dominique Robinson can attest.

The event has started releasing roster updates for both the American and National teams, revealing players the coaches will handle. Getsy got some great news when the offensive line results were announced. His lineup of blockers is filled with impressive talents. Five are projected to go in the first three rounds this spring. O'Cyrus Torrence of Florida is ranked by many as the best guard in this class. The same goes for John Michael Schmitz of Minnesota at center. That doesn't exclude tackles Darnell Wright (Tennessee) and Matthew Bergeron (Syracuse), who have rapidly risen up expert boards in the past month.

Luke Getsy couldn't ask for a better opportunity.

The Bears offensive line was one of the worst in the NFL this past season. They surrendered 58 sacks. That can't happen if this team wants to get the most out of Justin Fields. That is why many believe the line will be a significant focus in free agency and the draft. Remember, Poles selected four blockers last year. It is a big focus for him. He will undoubtedly grill Getsy for details on what he encounters from those young men during the week in Mobile, Alabama.

When looking at the list of options, the names Bears fans should circle are Torrence and Wright. Torrence has plenty of size and power to the table. He also has unusual length for a guard. He overpowers guys in the run game and doesn't lack nastiness. What Luke Getsy must figure out is how athletic he is. There are questions about his range and quickness. Wright is also big and long, showcasing excellent awareness and technique in pass protection. He shut down most of the best pass rushers in the SEC. His range isn't overly great, but that is a minor issue. An accommodating coach would recognize his value.
