Teven Jenkins is easily one of the best stories of 2022. He endured a back injury that robbed him of most of his rookie season. He came into this year believing he'd be a starter at tackle for the team. Then before training camp even kicked off, he was effectively benched by the new coaching staff. It was an unfamiliar feeling for the second-year blocker. What many don't know is that it mentally sent him to a dark place for a period of time. While rumors persisted that Jenkins might be traded and was in the doghouse for some perceived issues at practice, something else was happening inside his head.
Doubt.
He sat down with Chicago Bears announcer Jeff Joniak to discuss what happened during that time. He admitted that there was a brief window where he contemplated whether he was doing the right thing by pursuing a career in football. Maybe he wasn't good enough.
Thankfully, the presence of his significant other proved crucial to getting his mind re-focused. Then offensive line coach placed a phone call that changed his career trajectory. The Bears were going to move him inside to right guard. Jenkins had a decision to make. Either he could resist and fight for a chance at tackle or roll with the idea and embrace the opportunity. He chose the latter.
Teven Jenkins is suddenly the Bears' best blocker.
That isn't even up for debate. He is their highest-graded run blocker this season and has improved steadily in pass protection over the last month. Only five pressures were allowed in five games. The scariest part is he clearly isn't a finished product. There are parts of his game that are raw and need refinement. Hardly a surprise since he didn't make the switch until right before the season began. How much better could he be with an entire off-season to prepare? That is what should have Bears fans excited the most.
Everything is a testament to Teven Jenkins' resilience through a challenging period. Battling through injuries is one thing. Throwing a regime change and benching on top of that would break other players. He didn't let it. Thanks to some hard work and a strong support group, he may have found the role he was meant to play. Many already see him as a potential Pro Bowler in the future. That would add to an already great story. Here's hoping he is able to see it through.
