So, I'm texting a friend during the game last night and after every field goal I had the same thought. You can't continue to waste these opportunities in the red zone because that's how you lose when you don't have the better QB. That was especially true in the second half, when the Bears began the third quarter with a solid drive that eventually ended with a Cody Parkey 33-yard field goal to give the Bears a 20-0 lead.
You know, it's fun to hate on Aaron Rodgers, but there's no denying that he's the best quarterback in the NFL. Fine, if you want to put Tom Brady ahead of him, then at worst Rodgers is the second best. Anyway, by now we know as Bears fans that you simply can't allow one of the best quarterbacks ever any room for a comeback.
The Bears did and boy did everyone play a part in the epic collapse.
Matt Nagy was somehow conservative, but also kind of not in the second half?
For example, overall the Bears had eight 3rd and 3s or shorter, but they only converted on four of them. The play calling was questionable, as Nagy only gave the ball to Jordan Howard once, while Tarik Cohen got two carries. That means there were five pass attempts on 3rd down and 3 or shorter.
Back in the first quarter the Bears had the ball at the Packers' 3-yard line and here's where coaching and players both screwed. Mitch Trubisky missed Allen Robinson in the corner of the end zone, on what should have been an easy touchdown and then on 3rd and goal from the three, Nagy called this play? (1:44) https://youtu.be/d6OATIupK34?t=104 Not sure if it was supposed to be handed off to Taylor Gabriel and then it became a broken play, but whatever it was Nagy got too cute. It seemed like that for several plays, where Nagy got too ahead of himself. The biggest blunder was on the 3rd down and 2 from Green Bay's 14-yard line, with 2:47 left in the game. Trubisky threw an incomplete pass to Anthony Miller. That was right after Howard amassed 30 yards in the drive, including carries of 16 and 11 yards. So, in one hand you have Nagy being aggressive on that play, going for the touchdown on a throw, but if that was the thinking then why not go for the win again on 4th down? You get a first down, you win the game. But no, Nagy elected for the field goal, going up 23-17. Then, Kyle Fuller could have also won the game.
And then anyone on the Bears defense could have tackled Randall Cobb.
Rodgers embarrassed the defense in the second half and that includes Bears' DC Vic Fangio, who didn't make any adjustments to the quick release by Rodgers. And even after all that the Bears still had a chance to win. Plenty of time left after Cobb's 75-yard touchdown, with two timeouts and the two-minute warning. But Trubisky looked rattled under the pressure coming from Green Bay and after being bailed out by Clay Matthews' roughing the passer penalty, Trubisky only completed a 12-yard pass to Robinson before three straight incompletions and ultimately fumbling on 4th and 10 from the Bears' 46. The passing plays didn't make any sense on that drive because it seemed like they were only running deep routes. It's not like the Bears needed a touchdown and they had plenty of time to just dink and dunk into field goal position. So, the play calling was suspect, no adjustments made on defense in the second half, the decision to not go for it on fourth down, Fuller dropping the INT, no one tackling Cobb, Trubisky playing bad, Howard stepping out of bounds, almost everyone played a role in the loss. By the way, when you decide to limit reps in the preseason you can't then make the excuse of players not getting enough time after losing that game last night. Guess what Matt Nagy did.
It's only one game and this isn't to say that the Bears won't be good because not every game will be against Aaron Rodgers, but that was a pretty underwhelming debut for Matt Nagy. I feel safe speaking for most Bears fans, expected a lot better from Nagy. Like a lot better. After the first two drives, the offense looked pretty bad. Anyway, the Seattle Seahawks aren't very good, and Khalil Mack might have an even better game next Monday Night than he did against the Packers.
Everyone to blame last night, but Khalil Mack who is an absolute beast. So yeah, rough loss. Painful loss, dumb excuses, but it's just week one.
