People weren't sure what to expect from Ryan Poles when he conducted his first draft as Chicago Bears GM last season. Rumors flew in all directions, but no hard evidence surfaced. That is why it was a considerable surprise when the Bears took not one but two defensive backs with their first two picks of the Poles era. First came Washington cornerback Kyler Gordon. A few minutes later, Penn State safety Jaquan Brisker followed. While draft experts were high on both players, it was still shocking that Poles didn't invest more in helping quarterback Justin Fields.
Time may have proven the GM wise.
Brisker was an instant hit as a rookie in 2022, leading the team with four sacks and finishing second with 104 tackles. Gordon also overcame an ugly start to the year and finished with three interceptions, only one behind team leader Eddie Jackson's four. It offered hope that the two could make a sizable leap in 2023 now that they have experience under their belts. Based on reports out of training camp, they've already exceeded expectations. Gordon and Brisker not only look good in drills, but they've been taking turns making life hell for Justin Fields and the Bears' offense.
The Bears’ secondary is making a big impression. Second-year cornerback Kyler Gordon has had as strong a training camp as anyone, and that’s a massive development considering he was general manager Ryan Poles’ first-ever draft pick. Now focused only on the nickel corner position, Gordon’s versatility is shining. In one team period yesterday, Gordon delivered an interception, a tackle for loss and a sack in a matter of minutes. I guess those are the “Spidey senses” the coaches have been talking about.
Meanwhile, second-year safety Jaquan Brisker is also having a strong camp and there’s a fun, competitive battle between rookies Tyrique Stevenson and Terrell Smith for the No. 2 cornerback spot. - Adam Hoge, CHGO
Ryan Poles has every reason to be thrilled.
Some fans won't like hearing that the Bears offense is struggling, but Charles Tillman said it best. The defense plays for the team too. It's never a bad thing when they're making plays. After all, the defense let the team down a lot last season, allowing too many points (27 per game) and folding late in games. Gordon and Brisker have no desire to repeat such an experience. Their newfound intensity and production reflect that. It seems to be infecting the rest of the defense too. Everybody is flying to the football.
The offense will be fine. They've had good days too. Don't be surprised if they bounce back this weekend with a sharp response. What matters the most is that the young guys are starting to emerge. Even during the draft, Ryan Poles expressed that Gordon and Brisker had a chance to be foundational pieces. Their play of late makes that look like a premonition. If the team can generate even a modestly improved pass rush this season, there is no telling how lethal that combo can become.
