The David Montgomery Era Just Ended In Bittersweet Fashion

Ryan Poles expressed an interest in keeping David Montgomery. He made it clear every time he was asked. However, as the off-season drew near, it became more and more obvious the Chicago Bears GM wasn't going to make a strong push to re-sign him. When no deal materialized, the former 3rd round pick reached the open market. Nobody knew what would happen next. Well, now we do. As is often the case in these situations, Montgomery decided to take his talent to a division rival. He officially joined the Detroit Lions on a three-year, $18 million deal.

Poles has made it clear he thought little of Ryan Pace's roster building since he took over last year. Several core players were jettisoned almost immediately. When Roquan Smith joined that group, it became evident nobody was safe. Montgomery has been a steady, dependable presence on offense for the Bears since arriving in 2019 as a 3rd round pick. His relentless, never-say-die running style made him a fan favorite. However, last season proved Khalil Herbert was a far better fit for the Bears' new offense.

Finding a David Montgomery replacement will be interesting.

Poles could look to the veteran market. There are several notable names still available, including Myles Sanders, Kareem Hunt, Jamaal Williams, and D'Onta Foreman. They could also look into trading for Austin Ekeler, who appears to be available. However, with ten picks in the upcoming 2023 draft, it wouldn't be a surprise if the team looks to find somebody to pair with Herbert on a cheaper rookie deal. There is no shortage of options. Coming from Kansas City, Poles understands value can be found in later rounds. Even undrafted free agency.

The fact is David Montgomery was never his guy. He doesn't possess the skills the Bears GM looks for in a running back. He'll want more explosion and receiving ability. It wouldn't hurt to find someone that can pass block consistently too. It isn't a surprise Montgomery chose Detroit. They have a good team with a good offensive line. He gets to play indoors and might have a chance to compete for the playoffs this year. No doubt he will seek some revenge on his former team along the way.
