There Is Only One Luke Getsy Solution If Bears Aim To Keep Fields And Eberflus

Three games remain for the Chicago Bears. No decision has been made on the fates of head coach Matt Eberflus or quarterback Justin Fields. Some think the two are destined to find their way out the door. Others think they've done enough to warrant another year together, hopefully with even more talent on the roster. GM Ryan Poles will be the one to make that decision in tandem with team president Kevin Warren. However, one change seems inevitable regardless of which direction they choose. Luke Getsy has to go.

Over the past few weeks, Eberflus has been granted multiple opportunities to stand up for his embattled offensive coordinator. While he's maintained Getsy will remain the play caller for the rest of the season, he has dodged every chance to commit to him beyond 2023. This suggests that if the head coach survives another season, he will make a change at offensive coordinator. There will be plenty of options he can look to.

Frank Reich is available after his unceremonious dismissal from Carolina. The two worked together in Indianapolis. Eric Bieniemy will likely be available once Washington's staff is cleaned out, as most expect. If Atlanta fires Arthur Smith, that is another obvious option. However, if the Bears want to do everything possible to get the most from Fields, there is only one choice.

That is Greg Roman.

Roman can give the Bears what Luke Getsy can't.

The longtime coordinator has his critics. He's never earned a reputation for developing great passing attacks. However, he is a wizard at building punishing ground attacks and has routinely gotten the most out of several dual-threat quarterbacks. Ten years ago, he came yards away from winning the Super Bowl with Colin Kaepernick in San Francisco. He got Tyrod Taylor to a Pro Bowl in Buffalo. Then, in Baltimore, he turned Lamar Jackson into a league MVP. People victimized him for not turning Jackson into more of a pocket passer, which is why he was fired. Of course, they conveniently ignored it wasn't until this year they added capable receivers like Odell Beckham and Zay Flowers.

Regardless, nobody would understand how to utilize the athletic freak Fields is better than Roman. He'd immediately weaponize his legs far better than Luke Getsy or Matt Nagy ever could. He would also do great work for Cole Kmet. Roman's offense is a significant benefit to tight ends. It may not create the dazzling aerial attack everybody wants to see, but if the Bears are committed to winning in 2024 by any means necessary, they must accept the best thing to do is work to what Fields does best.
