Remember when a Green Bay Packers player four years ago said their entire goal was to make Mitch Trubisky "play quarterback"? That is the worst insult you can ever throw at a QB. It's a blatant sign of disrespect. Luke Getsy appeared to have one such moment of his own on Sunday. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers became the latest team to hold his offense under 20 points, marking the sixth time in eight games dating back to last season that this has happened. What made it worse was how many chances they had to avoid it.
Every time they gained momentum, something went wrong. Justin Fields missed a read. An offensive lineman missed a block. A pass would get dropped. The execution continues to be poor. Yet, worst of all may have been how appallingly predictable the play calling was. Getsy showcased zero creativity with his approach. Everything he tried rarely worked. Never was that clearer than on the decisive play of the game when Fields threw a disastrous pick-six to Shaq Barrett to put the game out of reach.
After it ended, linebacker Lavonte David said everybody on defense knew the play was coming.
Luke Getsy can't hide from the criticism anymore.
People were willing to give him some time to settle in. He didn't have a lot of experience coordinating, so 2022 was his learning period. This was supposed to be his breakout time. He finally had better players to work with. The quarterback knew the system. Progress was both expected and demanded. Neither has materialized. Part of it is Justin Fields' ongoing struggles. However, it's also apparent Getsy lacks a natural feel for play calling. Once the Bears get beyond the opening drive script, they almost always fall apart.
Such failures can't be blamed entirely on players. It's up to the coaches to put them in good positions to succeed. Luke Getsy hasn't done that. He has capable weapons. The offensive line isn't terrible. Unless he's prepared to throw his quarterback under the bus for everything, head coach Matt Eberflus must face reality. His choice for offensive coordinator may have been a misfire. This is a sad reality many in his position face, but it seems to happen way too often with the Bears.
The only question now seems to be what comes first. Either the Bears dismiss Getsy or bench Fields.
