The general reaction to the Chicago Bears drafting of David Montgomery is highly positive. They needed a running back and they got a good one. How good though? While nobody would call him the most explosive back in the class, he might be the most well-rounded. There isn't any weakness to his game.
What might be most encouraging is one scout said about him leading up to the draft. Lance Zierlein of NFL.com got a quote from an AFC scouting director asking for an opinion on who Montgomery is as a player. Normally the responses are measured. Not this one.
The guy seemed more than a little animated about the young running back and what he could become. Namely the best back to come out of the 2019 draft class.
"That's my guy! If he gets with the right team, he's going to be the best running back to come out of this class and you won't have to draft him early either."
David Montgomery is the type of player defenses hate
The thing that stands out most about Montgomery is he's a nuisance. He just finds ways to slice, gash, and cut defenses over and over. He is a headache to tackle, finds creases well, and made 71 catches in college. So you know he'll be a threat out of the backfield. People talk about needing speed so much, but at running back it's low on the list of requirements.
GM Ryan Pace said he valued vision most at that position. Montgomery has that, and more. He is an every-down player who takes his job seriously. All of it. Not just the running or catching too. He'll stick his nose in as a pass protector as well. Matt Nagy has seen this type of player before in Kansas City with Kareem Hunt.
He'll know exactly how to utilize him. The fact he's only 21-years old makes the selection all the better. That Bears offense looks more dangerous than ever before, which is a weird thing to say.
