Three Big Takeaways From Bears OTA

The Bears held a few OTAs this week, but only Thursday's session was open to the media. Here are the three key takeaways from that open OTA.

Caleb Williams and the offense struggled.

According to all reports, Caleb Williams had a tough day. He struggled with many incomplete passes and near interceptions. Nicholas Moreano, CHGO Bears beat writer, reported that during the 7-on-7 period, Williams completed only three passes. Jaylon Johnson nearly intercepted a pass over the middle of the field. In the team period, most of Williams passes were to the flat, and he held onto the ball for way to long time.

It's important to note that Rome Odunze and Keenan Allen did not participate in the 7-on-7s or the team period, which left the rookie quarterback without two major targets.

Additionally, Nate Davis and Darnell Wright were not practicing today—more on that later. Overall, the offense had a rough day. Fortunately, it's only May 23, so there's plenty of time to iron things out as the team adapts to a new offense under new offensive coordinator Shane Waldron. There's no need to panic yet.

Key players were missing from OTA.

Montez Sweat, Keenan Allen, Darnell Wright, Nate Davis, and Velus Jones Jr. did not attend today's voluntary practice. However, keep in mind that it's again only May 23, so this isn't necessarily significant but worth montioring.

Defense is picking up right where they left off.

It's no secret that the Bears defense was strong at the end of last season. According to reports, the defense is picking up right where they left off and is currently ahead of the offense. While this is something we've heard before, it's important to note that the Bears offense is entirely new under offensive coordinator Shane Waldron, whereas the defense is still using the same playbook they are used to. But this defense has the potential to be truly special, particularly with the strength of the back seven.
