If you're ever going to ask for advice on what it takes to be the best, it's smart to ask the best. Wide receiver Allen Robinson is probably among the smartest players on the Chicago Bears roster and maybe in the NFL. That is why when he had an opportunity to speak with New England Patriots legend Tom Brady down in Florida, he refused to waste it.
Robinson was down in Miami as a finalist for the Walter Payton Man of the Year award. Brady was there as well to attend the NFL Honors ceremony. According to Patrick Finley of the Chicago Sun-Times, the two ran into each during the festivities. The conversation they struck up centered on Bill O'Brien, Brady's former offensive coordinator and Robinson's head coach at Penn State.
It was then the receiver asked for any advice the all-time great quarterback had. Fittingly, it was simple but entirely valid to everything about the Chicago Bears and how they move forward.
“It’s a very up-and-down league,” Robinson said. “Just try to stay even-keel as possible. Through all the noise and all the madness, just try to stay even-keel.”
Tom Brady knows the pitfalls of being too emotional
This statement is rather timely. If one could say anything about the 2019 Bears, it was that they didn't handle the highs and lows of the season too well. When things were good, they declared Super Bowl. When things were bad, it felt at times like they'd given up. There wasn't any consistency in their performances and that is the risk a team runs when they play more with emotion than a business-like efficiency.
This is often what separates the okay teams from the great ones. Being able to shut out the noise and move from week to week with the same exact mindset and approach. This is often what has set the Patriots apart from every other team. If they win? Good. Move on to the next one. If they lose? Whatever. Move on to the next one. Bill Belichick has always championed the simple phrase: do your job. That's it. Just do your job.
The Bears have the talent to go far in 2020. If they can adopt that sort of mentality, they'll be hard to stop.
