It's no secret to anybody with a modicum of football knowledge that the Chicago Bears wide receivers have become a wasteland. Free agency started the deterioration when Alshon Jeffery elected to sign elsewhere. Then it got worse when his replacement, Cameron Meredith went down with a season-ending injury. Kevin White, the once hyped first round pick soon followed with a busted shoulder blade.
They say quarterback is the most cursed position in Bears history. That might not be true. Wide receiver can make a good argument of its own. How else does one explain the franchise leader having been retired since 1967? Suffice to say GM Ryan Pace has work to do if he's going to make sure prize young QB Mitch Trubisky is a success moving forward.
Tanner Gentry, Tre McBride and Kendall Wright aren't the combination that going to accomplish that. Almost everybody agrees the Bears will be on the hunt for receiving help in 2018. It's just a matter of who they go get. Well at least one notable talent is already throwing his name in the hat. (continue to next page)
Calvin Ridley would love to join Chicago Bears wide receivers
Anybody who follows college football has heard the name Calvin Ridley by now. He's considered by several draft sources to be among the best wide receivers in the country, maybe even the best. Some might be confused by that since he has only 33 catches for 441 yards through eight games this year. That is people not understanding context. Alabama is a run-first football team. They don't throw a lot. On top of that it's no secret that the quarterback play for the Crimson Tide is limited this year. Ridley has 441 yards. The next closest man on the roster is Jerry Jeudy with 160. So in essence Ridley is almost the entire passing offense. That's understandable. Know why? He's really good. He's also something else. Apparently he's good friends with Bears safety Eddie Jackson. That would make sense. The two were teammates at Alabama and went against each other constantly in practice. Turns out Jackson has kept track of his former team and is sending his boy shout outs on Twitter. Ridley of course responds in kind.
It also appears that Ridley has designs on coming to Chicago as well. He was tuned in for the NFL draft back in April. No doubt he saw the selection of Trubisky two nights before. So when he saw them scoop up his friend Jackson in the fourth round, he just hands to speak up with a pronouncement of his own.
Trubisky to Ridley. It's hard not to like the sound of that. In many ways Ridley is the ideal sort of receiver for Mitch. He's fast, quick, runs good routes and has reliable hands. Lord knows Ridley has never had a quarterback of his caliber. The potential marriage could be lethal. Time will tell.
