The Chicago Bears were eliminated from playoff contention on Sunday following a 21-13 loss to the Green Bay Packers. With two games remaining this season, one of the biggest questions heading into the off-season will be with the quarterback position. Sunday showed why Mitchell Trubisky is the best option for next season over some of the possible veterans who may be brought in for competition.
Although Chicago lost and Trubisky was intercepted twice, he played well and kept the Bears in the game. The Bears QB finished the day with 29 completions for 334 yards and one touchdown. Trubisky has passed for 300 yards in two of his last three starts and is getting more of his receivers involved as Anthony Miller has caught 27 passes in the last four games.
Trubisky has played better following a tough start to the season. He has had 14 touchdowns since his return from his shoulder injury in week 6. Chicago's quarterback has only two games this season in which he was picked up more than once. Trubisky has done this despite struggles from the offensive line to protect and an inconsistent running game all season.
Throughout this season, fans and the media have suggested several veteran quarterback names that the team should target in the off-season. Some of those names include Phillip Rivers, Cam Newton, Andy Dalton, Kyle Allen, and Nick Foles. Trubisky has out-performed all of these quarterbacks who have played, especially on Sunday.
Rivers, Dalton, and Allen combined for 10 interceptions on Sunday as none of them failed to pass for 300 yards. Furthermore, all three teams have failed to win more than five games this season. Foles was benched a few weeks ago in favor of Gardner Minshew while Cam Newton has been out since week 2 with a foot injury.
Rivers and Dalton will be free agents in the off-season and neither has had impressive seasons. Cincinnati benched their nine-year starter for three games earlier this season while Rivers has thrown 18 interceptions. Allen has thrown 10 interceptions in his last five starts and will be benched for the final two games of the season.
With Newton and Foles, their performance and health will come into issue. Newton has finished the last two seasons on injured reserved with the injuries having an impact on both his passing and running ability. His 2018 season ended due to a right shoulder injury while this season was ended due to the foot injury. Foles suffered a broken collar bone in week 1 and missed the next 10 weeks.
If the Bears are looking to provide Trubisky with competition, their best bet may be through the draft. General manager Ryan Pace would be able to use a mid-round pick and save money by drafting a quarterback for head coach Matt Nagy to develop. It may be the best for the team to go this route, especially with the way some of the discussed names have played.
With two games left, Trubisky will have a chance to solidify why he should be the Bears quarterback in 2020 without any competition. A good performance against Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs would go a long way. If Trubisky can finish the season strong, the quarterback position may not be one of focus in the off-season.
