David Montgomery is quickly establishing himself as a presence for the Chicago Bears. The top overall pick of their 2019 draft already turned some heads at rookie minicamps. A welcome sign that the team chose wisely picking him. Even more interesting than his on-the-field work though is his various stories off it. The kid is actually a bit of a character.
Don't misconstrue that word. He's a tireless worker and tremendous leader. However, it seems he has a bit of a playful personality that can shine through even during darker times. A perfect example is how he came to create a legitimate alter ego for himself. It started back in the summer of 2018.
A tornado had torn through Marshalltown, Iowa. The damage was horrific. In response, the Iowa State football team including Montgomery went to lend their aid to the cleanup and rescue efforts. It was there that SoundOFF, a popular sports news program out of Des Moines asked for an interview.
Rather than give his actual name though, the running back went for an alias instead. One that incorporated the names of two of the most iconic martial artists in history. Thus the legend of "Chuck Bruce" was born.
David Montgomery fueled the Chuck Bruce legend later that year
Montgomery wouldn't take on that alias again until during the 2018 season. In a game against Baylor, the running back got into a scuffle with defensive lineman Greg Roberts. The 6'5, 264 lbs defensive end took a swing at Montgomery's head right in front of an official. Rather than back down though, the running back took a swing of his own.
Both players were ejected from the game. Montgomery was forced to serve a one-half suspension the next week against Texas. Without their star player, it was suggested the team bring in Chuck Bruce to fill in for those first two quarters. A clever joke that involved Montgomery's photo with a mustache added to hide his identity.
If nothing else, this is a reminder that hidden beneath the personality of that up-standing citizen Montgomery is, there is a guy who fears nobody when they try to come after him. He's a fighter. Just like Chuck and Bruce were back in their heydays.
