Marcus Spears played under some pretty good head coaches in his football career. Nick Saban in college. Bill Parcells and John Harbaugh in the NFL. So he has a pretty good idea of what they're supposed to look like. When it comes to Matt Nagy? Color him unimpressed. The former defensive end and current ESPN analyst looked like he was about to have a stroke when listening to the
Chicago Bears head coach on Tuesday.
This was after Nagy declared that nothing has changed regarding the quarterback situation. When Andy Dalton is healthy, he will be the starting quarterback. Justin Fields will resume his role as the backup. Spears hasn't understood this approach. Especially after how good Fields looked in the preseason. Then he delivers a bunch of tantalizing flashes in the win over Detroit. Yet Nagy continues
clinging to Dalton because he clearly knows best.
Spears doesn't want to hear it anymore.

Spears isn't the only one to have this sort of reaction. Fellow analyst Rich Eisen of NFL Network said Matt Nagy isn't making much sense in this approach. The Bears offense finally seems to have some traction. Fields provided them with big plays and appears to be gaining comfort. Now right as this is happening, the head coach wants to tinker with the machine by going back to Dalton.
There just isn't much logic behind it. Not only does it threaten to disrupt any momentum they've built, but it also hampers Fields in his ability to fully grasp the offense. There is no substitute for game experience in the NFL. Yet Nagy seems so certain adhering to the Kansas City approach is the right call. Even if that means subjecting Bears fans to a Dalton experience they want no part of.
With all due respect to the 33-year old, they've seen his type way too many times. Smart, efficient, and a solid leader. Also, somebody who can't put a team on his back. Dalton is the time who can drive the speed limit but never street race. Maybe the Bears win eight games with him, but what purpose will that serve other than robbing Fields of valuable snaps? Only Nagy knows apparently.
