Let us preface everything with a simple statement. Marquise Goodwin has proven many times in the past to be an upstanding human being. Someone who does charity work all the time. However, the fact is human beings can have more than one motive for doing something. In the case of Goodwin? It wasn't too difficult to surmise what he might be trying to do when he was spotted attending a youth football camp alongside Chicago Bears 1st round pick Justin Fields.
Any wide receiver with half a brain knows that his future is dependent on a good relationship with the quarterback. Goodwin is smart enough to understand that Fields is the future in Chicago. His being able to forge a strong relationship with the young QB will only help his chances to not only excel on the field but perhaps stay with the Bears beyond 2021. What better way to do this than gladly help out with Fields' charity activities.
It is a perfectly honest way to get a leg up on his competition.

Fields and Goodwin seem like such a natural pair together. A quarterback with a strong arm and excellent deep ball coupled with a wide receiver who has blazing speed. They could make sweet music together if they develop strong chemistry. Much of this though depends on timing. Chicago has made it clear for months now that Fields isn't going to play until the coaches deem him ready. Until that time, Andy Dalton is the starter. One would think Goodwin would focus his time on that connection. As stated earlier though, he isn't dumb. That job will be Fields' at some point. Law of averages says he will start this season. The receiver wants to make sure he is in the QB's plans when that happens.Marquise Goodwin has a lot to prove this season
Many felt he was ready to become one of the best speed receivers in football after his breakout year in 2017. Unfortunately, injuries slowed him over the next two seasons in San Francisco, and then COVID-19 hit in 2020. As a result, people seemed to forget about him. Signing with the Bears was his chance to get back on the map. That they ended up drafting a talented 1st round quarterback at the same time proved quite fortuitous. It isn't an exaggeration to say that Fields, from a skillset perspective, is easily the best fit Marquise Goodwin has ever played with. Just look at his previous quarterbacks for an idea.- E.J. Manuel
- Kyle Orton
- Tyrod Taylor
- Jimmy Garoppolo
- C.J. Beathard
- Brian Hoyer
- Nick Mullens
Not the most inspiring list.
Also not one that features the strongest arms in the world. None of those guys could be called the best deep ball passers in the world. One can easily make a case teams still haven't unlocked the full potential of what Goodwin can do. Fields could change that, which is probably what the Bears had in mind when they drafted him.Comments
