Not many things have gone right for the Chicago Bears this season. Injuries have run rampant. Their defense can't stop anybody. The passing game is a major sore spot thanks to protection and receiving issues. However, there are bright spots. One of them has been their dominant ground attack, headlined mostly by the triumvirate of Justin Fields, David Montgomery, and Khalil Herbert. Nobody realized it all year, but the team was drawing close to topping the franchise record for most rushing yards in a single season. Sure enough, it wasn't any of those three but wide receiver Velus Jones that ended up pushing them over the finish line.
He did it in grand fashion too. Trailing 16-0 in the first half against Minnesota, Jones got the ball on a craft end-around. He evaded tacklers and tight-roped the sideline for a wild 42-yard touchdown. That broke the long-standing mark set back in 1984.
It is the latest of multiple big highlights for Jones. He had a 50-yard catch against Buffalo two weeks ago and a 63-yard kick return last week against Detroit. Now he adds this nifty run to the growing tally. For all his obvious struggles earlier in the season, the rookie has become one of their best big-play weapons.
