VIDEO: Velus Jones Jr. Announces Return In Explosive Fashion

Velus Jones wasn't available for the Chicago Bears preseason opener against Kansas City. He was dealing with an undisclosed injury. So people had high hopes for his debut in Seattle against the Seahawks. Things didn't get off to a great start. He had a nice 30-yard kick return to open the game but fumbled at the end of it. Hopefully, it was jitters and he'd be able to settle in as things progressed. Those hopes were fulfilled. After a nice 52-yard drive by the offense, the Bears defense forced a Seahawks punt on the subsequent series. Jones got another opportunity to make a play. He didn't disappoint. The 3rd round pick fielded the kick and ran it back 48 yards. His trademark speed was on full display. For all the talk about his age at 25, the receiver was able to remind people there is a reason he is in the NFL. He has significant talent. Velus Jones can help open up this Bears offense.

That kind of speed is rare, even for the NFL. It was a big reason GM Ryan Poles targeted him in the draft. Yet his abilities go beyond running fast. His quickness, agility, and strengths are other reasons. The guy is dangerous with the ball in his hands. That play is one such example. It wasn't a surprise the Bears chose not to utilize him much on offense the rest of the game. They aren't going to show their hand on what plans they have. Velus Jones is a weapon. They think they have something special in their repertoire. The punt return was only a little taste of what they've seen in practice the past month. If he can carry over this big-play ability into the regular season, the Bears will suddenly become a far more dangerous football team. He and Darnell Mooney can make for a nasty combination. No doubt the coaches are anxious for the real games to start.
